The 200 thread count mark is where the polycotton weave becomes noticeably smoother without becoming impractical.
Below 150 thread count, sheets feel coarser and tend to pill faster. Above 300 thread count in polycotton, the fabric is rarely as smooth as the number suggests and is harder to maintain in a laundering environment.
Hotel housekeeping teams favour polycotton over pure cotton because it requires far less ironing time and dries 20–30% faster in a tumble dryer. For domestic users, the benefit is the same: iron it once and it stays presentable through a full week's use.
